The Greater Albuquerque Metro-Plex includes not just Albuquerque itself, but also many surrounding suburbs and communities. Albuquerque itself is unique as a city in that the "city" itself includes many areas and neighborhoods that would, in any eastern city, be considered "suburban," or even "rural."Albuquerque itself contains distinct areas, including the NE and SE Heights, the "West Side," the "University Area," and the North Valley and Los Ranchos de Albuquerque.

Surrounding communities include the small neighboring city of Rio Rancho, the quaint valley village of Corrales and trendy Placitas to the north, the East Mountain communities of Tijeras, Cedar Crest, Edgewood and Moriarty, and the rural and small town areas of Valencia County to the South.
